1740 Broadway is a 25-storey office building that originally belonged to the Mutual of New York Insurance, hence it was formerly known as the MONY Building or Mutual of New York Building. Its present owner is Vornado Realty Trust. 1740 Broadway's call to fame is the Weather Star, the 46 meter (150-foot) weather vane that tells everything except wind direction.

The weather vane is actually a pole with a star at the end. The color of the star tells whether the weather is fair, cloudy, rain, or snow. Rising temperatures are indicated by moving lights up the pole while falling temperatures are indicated conversely. The 1740 Broadway was built in 1950. It was designed by Shreve, Lamb and Harmon, the firm that also designed the Empire State Building. You can see the resemblance in the two buildings. Citibank is one of the anchor tenants on the ground floor.

The 1740 Broadway is said to be the inspiration for the Tommy James & The Shondells song Mony Mony.

How to reach 1740 Broadway

Take the N, Q, R or W train to the 57th Street subway station. Walk south along Seventh Avenue until intersection with West 55th Street. Turn right and walk west along West 55th Street until the intersection with Broadway. 1740 Broadway is on the left corner of the intersection.
