More on Aberdeen

Warmest month is Aberdeen is July, with average high temperatures of 84.7°F (29.3°C). Coldest month, January, sees average low temperature dropping ton 0.6°F (-17.4°C). The city is arid, with annual precipitation of only 20.22 in (513.6 mm). June is the wettest month, receiving 3.49 in (88.6 mm) of rain.

The Aberdeen area was inhabited by various tribe of Native Americans. The Arikara Indians were believed to be the earliest to live there. They were joined by the Sioux Indians from around 1700 until 1879.

Like many of the towns in South Dakota, Aberdeen was the result of the railway line that was built through it. It was plotted as a town by Charles Prior, the superintendent of the railway company, on 3 January, 1881. It was named after Aberdeen, Scotland, the birthplace of Prior's boss, Alexander Mitchell, the president of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad.

Aberdeen has a low water table, making it prone to flash floods. Efforts to control the flood goes back to the late 19th century, when the city built a ditch to resolve the issue. It was unsuccessful, and instead caused more flooding. The city engineers then dug an artesian well with a gate valve, and in the process, gave Aberdeen a supply of running water. The city continued to be plagued by flood issues, the most recent being May, 2007, when a 48-hour downpour caused flood damage to over a hundred homes in the city.
