Abilene is a city in west central Texas. It covers 110.6 sq mi (286.5 sq km) and has a population of 160,000. The city is the county seat of Taylor County but spreads to include part of Jones County.

Abilene experiences a climate between the humid subtropical and the semi-arid steppe. July is the hottest month, when the average high temperature rises to 95.2°F (35.1°C). On the other hand, average low temperature for January drops to 30.7°F (-0.7°C). September is the wettest month, receiving 3.2 in (81.5 mm) of precipitation.

Abilene was founded as a stock shipping point by cattlemen in 1881. It was named after Abilene, Kansas, which was the original end point of the Chisholm Trail. The person who named it was Clabe Merchant, regarded as the father of Abilene. He was the landowner in the area. Lots were sold to new settlers and the city was incorporated as a town in 1882.

There are three universities in Abilene namely Hardin-Simmons University (founded as Simmons College in 1891), Abilene Christian University (founded as Childers Classical Institute in 1906) and McMurry University (founded as McMurry College in 1923). In recent years it also attracted Cisco Junior College and Texas State Technical College to set up branch campuses in the city.

Visiting Abilene

Interstate 20 runs east-west through Abilene, connecting it with Fort Worth to the east and Odessa to the west. To enter Abilene, take either Exit 279 from the west, or Exit 292 from the east. The highway skirts the northern part of Abilene, with Exits 283, 285, 286 and 288 providing access to the neighborhood to the north of the city center.
