Aiken is the county seat of Aiken County in central western South Carolina. It covers 16.2 sq mi (41.9 sq km) and has a population approaching 30,000 people (2011 estimate). It is one of the two largest cities in the Central Savannah River Area of central Georgia.

Aiken began as a settlement that was established when the railway line was built through the area in 1835. It was named after William Aiken, the founder of the railroad company. In the late 19th century was the choice getaway for wealthy people to spend their winter.

Aiken can be reached on Interstate 20 which runs between Columbia and Augusta, Georgia. Leave the highway at Exit 18.
