Akron is a city in Ohio and county seat of Summit County. It is on the Little Cuyahoga River, about 40 miles to the south of Cleveland. The city of Akron has a population of about 199,000 while the whole Cleveland-Akron-Elyria Combined Statistical Area has a population of 2.8 million people (2011 estimate).

Akron was founded in 1825 by Paul Williams and General Simon Perkins. In 1833, it was called South Akron because a nearby town of North Akron was also established. Both were later merged as one, and incorpated simply as Akron in 1836.
Akron experienced rapid economic growth in the early part of the 20th century, as it was the center for a number of important industries ranging from rubber to cereal. Quaker Oats used to be based here. At one time, Akron was home to all four major tire manufacturers namely Goodrich, Goodyear, Firestone and General Tire, earning it the title of Tire City.
