Alabama State Capitol is located on Goat Hill in Montgomery, Alabama. Built in 1851, it was originally known as the First Confederate Capitol. It was built on the foundation of the original state capitol which was erected there in 1847 but was destroyed by a fire two years after its completion. The capitol building was designed in the Greek Revivial architectural style by Barachias Holt. Its rotunda is painted with murals showing the history of Alabama.

The Alabama State Capitol underwent an expansion in 1885, with the addition of an east wing. This was followed by a south wing in 1906 and a north wing to match the south wing in 1912.

In 1985, the capitol underwent a renovation project, during which a constitutional amendment was passed to allow the Alabama Legislature to move into another building. Although the renovation was completed in 1992, Legislature did not move back into the Alabama State Capitol until 7 May, 2009, due to flooding in the State House where it has remained since 1985.
