Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico. It is also the county seat of Bernalillo County in the central part of New Mexico. The city has a population of 546,000 (2011 estimate) within a metropolitan area of 900,000 people.

Albuquerque is believed to have been named after the Spanish Duke of Albuquerque in the 17th century. The city was founded in 1706 by the Spanish. It was originally a farming community beside the Rio Grande river, which today flows through the city from north to south.

Albuquerque covers 181.3 sq mi (470 sq km). It is on the northern part of the Chihuhuan Desert. As such, it experiences an arid climate that is sunny and dry. Hottest month is July, when the temperature regularly exceeds 92°F. Coldest month is January, when the night temperature may drop to 23°F.

Albuquerque can be reached on Interstate 25 from Santa Fe to the north. Interstate 40 also passes through it from east to west. It connects the city with Flagstaff to the west and Amarillo to the east.

You can also fly to Albuquerque, touching down at the Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ), a major transportation hub served by American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta, Frontier, United Airlines and US Airways.
