Ames, right in the heart of Iowa, is the 9th most populous city in the state. It covers 21.58 sq mi (55.9 sq km) and has a population of 60,000 people (2011 estimate). It is the largest city in Story County but not the county seat, which is the city of Nevada 8 miles to the east.

Ames was founded in 1864 as a train station of the Cedar Rapids and Missouri Railroad. It was named after US Congressman Oakes Ames who was influential in getting the railroad built. It experiences a humid continental climate. July is the warmest month here, when the average high temperature rises to 84°F (29°C). Coldest month is January, when the average low temperature drops to 10°F (-12°C). June is the wettest month in Ames, receiving 5.01 in (127.3 mm) of rainfall.Ames today is a modern city and home to the Iowa State University. It is regarded as the birthplace of the world's first electronic digital computer, the Atanasoff-Berry Computer, conceived in 1937.
