From there they relocated to the south bank and established the settlement of Town at Proctor's. Over the next few years, the settlement was renamed a number of times, to Town at the Severn and then Anne Arundel's Towne, after the wife of Lord Baltimore, the first proprietor of the Province of Maryland.

In 1694 Anne Arundel's Towne was renamed Annapolis, in honor of Princess Anne of Denmark and Norway, who soon after became Queen Anne of England, Scotland and Ireland (1665-1714, reigned 1702-1707). The city became a temporary capital of the United States in 1783.

Today Annapolis is a small American city with a number of 18th century houses. It faces a number of challenges of the modern age, including traffic congestion.
