Bakersfield is a city in Kern County, California. With a population of 350,000 (2011 estimate), it is the 9th biggest city in the state. Bakersfield is located approximately midway between Fresno and Los Angeles. It is also the third largest inland city behind Fresno and Sacramento.

Bakersfield was founded in 1869 and was named after Colonel Thomas Baker who arrived there because of the California Gold Rush. Baker settled by the banks of the Kern River.

Bakersfield experiences a Mediterranean climate. Its summers are hot and dry while its winters cool and wet. Average summer temperatures may exceed 92°F (32°C) while winter temperatures may drop to 38.2°F (3.44°C) in December.

Bakersfield is located at the junction between State Route 99 and State Route 58. From Los Angeles, take Interstate 5 until Wheeler Ridge, and turn off at Exit 221 to State Route 99.
