Baton Rouge is the capital and second-largest city in Louisiana. It covers 79.1 sq mi (204.8 sq km) and has a population of 230,000 (2011 estimate), within a metropolitan area of 800,000 people. Baton Rouge is located in East Baton Rouge Parish, on the southeastern part of Louisiana. Its name means "red stick" in French.
