Bend is the county seat of Deschutes County in central Oregon. It covers 32.2 sq mi (83.5 sq km) and has a population of 77,000 (2011 estimate). It is the biggest city in the sparsely populated Central Oregan area and the fifth largest in the state.

The city of Bend is on the eastern edge of the Cascade Range that follows the Deschutes River. It is 3,623 ft (1,104 m) above sea level. The landscape here is one of pine forest growing with Ponderosa pine, juniper and sagebrush.Bend experiences a semi-arid high desert climate. Annual precipitation is just 11.7 in (300 mm) - just a little more than what Astoria along the coast receives in November. Warmest month is July, when the average high temperature rises to 80.7°F (27.1°C). January is the coldest month, when the average low temperature drops to 22.6°F (-5.2°C). Snow can be expected from November through February.

Bend was established on one of the few fordable points on the Deschutes River. The area was inhabited by various Native American tribes until the arrival of the first Europeans, fur trappers led by Peter Skene Ogden, in 1824. The pioneers forded the Deschutes River and called the area Farewell Bend. It became an incorporated municipality in 1905. It later dropped the "Farewell" from its name and became known officially as Bend.
