Beverly Hills is a city within Los Angeles County, in the western part of the City of Los Angeles. It is renowned as the home of Hollywood celebrities. Beverly Hills and neighbouring West Hollywood are in fact not part of the City of Los Angeles itself, but rather surrounded by it.

Beverly Hills covers 5.71 sq mi (14.79 sq km) and has a population of 34,000 (2011 estimate). It is bordered by Bel-Air and the Santa Monica Mountains to the north, West Hollywood, the Carthay neighborhood of Los Angeles, and the Fairfax District of Los Angeles to the east, the Los Angeles neighborhood of Beverlywood to the south, and Holmby Hills as well as Westwood Village and Century City to the west. The wealthiest neighborhoods are within the so-called Platinum Triangle comprising Beverly Hills and the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Bel Air and Holmby Hills.

Beverly Hills has the most expensive housing market in the United States, with a median home price of $2.21 million dollars. Nevertheless, Beverly Hills is not as uniformly wealthy as Hollywood tends portrays it. Even though some of the largest homes in Los Angeles County are in Beverly Hills, they make up just 10% of the houses of there. The majority of the homes are small duplex rental units and detached homes with area size of less than 3,000 square feet. In fact, the average household income in Beverly Hills is just over $71,000, which is only $18,000 higher than the county average.

Beverly Hills was said to have been named by the developers in 1906 after a city in Massachusetts called Beverly. The developers were intending to create a west-coast replica of this town.
