Binghamton was once a major manufacturing base. It had a population exceeding 80,000 in the mid 20th century. However, as the factories closed down, a significant portion of its population moved away. That, coupled with suburbanization, led to a marked decrease in its population.

The coldest month here is also January, when the temperature drops to 15°F (-9.4°C). The warmest months are June through August, with the highest average temperatures in July, at around 78.1°F (25.6°C). July also has the longest days with a total of 294.5 hours of sunshine compared with December, with only 80.6 hours.
