Bismarck is the state capital as well as second most populous city in North Dakota. The city, which is also the county seat of Burleigh County, covers 27.4 sq mi (71 sq km) and has a population of 61,000 people (2011 estimate). It is situated on the east bank of the Missouri River, 1,686 ft (514 m) above sea level.

Bismarck experiences a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Warmest month here is July, when the average temperature rises to 70.4°F (21.3°C). Coldest month is January, when the average temperature drops to 10.2°F (-12.1°C). Summers here are wet while winters dry with light to moderate snowfall.The Bismarck area was originally inhabited by the Mandan group of Native Americans at the time the first Europeans arrived. The city was founded in 1872 and was originally named Edwinton, after the civil engineer Edwin Ferry Johnson, who was the engineer-in-chief of the National Pacific Railway. In 1870 the National Pacific Railway renamed Edwinton to Bismarck, in honor of German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, with the intention of attracting German investments to the area.
In 1874 gold was discovered in the Black Hills nearby, and this provided the catalyst for the growth of the new town. It was selected to be the territory capital of North Dakota in 1883 and in 1889 it became the state capital.
