More on Boulder City

Boulder City was built in 1931, originally to be a bedroom community for workers constructing the Hoover Dam, which until 1947 was known as the Boulder Dam. On learning of job opportunities in the project, many unemployed men - it was the depth of the Great Depression - form squatter communities along the Colorado River, their ramshackle huts becoming known as Ragtown.

Boulder City is one of the rare examples of a town fully planned for the purpose of a specific mammoth project. Urban architect Saco Rienk DeBoer of the Netherlands was entrusted with the responsibility of designing it. Even after the dam was completed, the government continued to run Boulder City until 1959, and it was incorporated on 4 January, 1960.

When Boulder City was incorporated, its city charter as approved by its original residents prohibited gambling. This provision still stands today, making Boulder City one of only two locations in Nevada where gambling is illegal.
