Boulder is a small city in Colorado. The county seat of Boulder County, it covers 25.4 sq mi (65.7 sq km) and has a population slightly exceeding 100,000 (2011 estimate). This makes it the 11th most populous city in Colorado. Boulder is 20 miles to the northwest of Denver. It observes the Mountain Standard Time, which is seven hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-7), and six hours behind during Daylight Saving Time in summer.

The city of Boulder is located where the Rocky Mountains meet the Great Plains. To the west of the city are rock formations known as the Flatirons, popularly recognized as the symbol of Boulder. The city experiences a semi-arid climate. Summers in Boulder are hot and dry. The average high temperature reaches 87.2°F (30.67°C). Winters here are cold, with average low temperatures reaching 0°F (-18°C). You can expect some snowfall from November to April.

The economy of Boulder was supported by mining, particularly of gold, silver and coal, until the mid 20th century. As mining declined in its importance, the city diversified into tourism and non-polluting industries, such as being the site of the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
