Brookings is the fourth largest city in South Dakota. The seat of Brookings County, it covers 12 sq mi (31.1 sq km) and has a population of 22,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is located 1,621 ft (494 m) above sea level in the eastern part of the state.

Brookings experiences a humid continental climate with warm, wet summers and cold, dry winters. July is the hottest month, with average high temperature of 83°F (28°C), while January is the coldest month month, with average low temperature of 0°F (-18°C). Brookings is semi-arid, with total annual precipitation of 22.79 in (578.9 mm). June is the wettest month, receiving 4.23 in (107 mm) of rain.

Brookings was named after Wilmot Wood Brookings, one of the pioneer promoters of South Dakota. The city was incorporated in 1883.
