Buffalo is the second biggest city in the state of New York after New York City. It is located in Western New York, on the shores of Lake Erie, at the head of the Niagara River, about 17 miles (27 km) south of Niagara Falls. Buffalo has a population of 261,000 (2011 estimate) and is within a metropolitan area that has a population of 1.2 million people.

The city of Buffalo began as a small trading settlement in 1789. The Erie Canal which opened in 1825 help to spur its growth. By the turn of the 20th century, it had become the 8th biggest city in the United States. The economy of the city at that time was in grain milling. However, as the 20th century came to a close, the city had to diversify into other forms of economic activity, as shipping lanes and railway lines were rerouted.

Today the economy of Buffalo is dependent on health care and education. Its location close to the Canadian border has helped its retail sector, as the city receives a steady stream of shoppers taking advantage of the more attractive prices in Buffalo.

Buffalo experiences a humid continental climate. Its winters are cold and snowy, with temperatures in January dropping to around 18°F (-7.8°C). Warmest month is July, when the temperature regularly reaches 80°F (26.7°C).
