Butte is a city in Silver Bow County in eastern Montana. Both the city and county governments were consolidated as one since 1977. The county of Silver Bow covers 716.8 sq mi (1,867.6 sq km) and has a population of 34,200 people (2011 estimate). It is 5,538 ft (1,688 m) above sea level.

Butte is a city on the Continental Divide. It experience a continental semi-arid climate. Total precipitation for the entire year is just 12.78 in (324.6 mm). The wettest month is June, which receives 2.07 in (52.6 mm) of rain. July is the hottest month in Butte, when the average high temperature reaches 80°F (27°C). January is the coldest month, with average low temperature of 5°F (-15°C).The history of Butte has been tied all along to mining. Founded in the late 19th century, it was a site for gold and silver mining, followed by copper mining. The city also has one of the largest deposits of Bornite in the world. Mining activities in Butte declined in the 1950s and the quality of ore went down.

Interstate 90 and 15 are the two main highways linking Butte with the rest of the country.
