Butte is a city in Silver Bow County in eastern Montana. Both the city and county governments were consolidated as one since 1977. The county of Silver Bow covers 716.8 sq mi (1,867.6 sq km) and has a population of 34,200 people (2011 estimate). It is 5,538 ft (1,688 m) above sea level.

Butte is a city on the Continental Divide. It experience a continental semi-arid climate. Total precipitation for the entire year is just 12.78 in (324.6 mm). The wettest month is June, which receives 2.07 in (52.6 mm) of rain. July is the hottest month in Butte, when the average high temperature reaches 80°F (27°C). January is the coldest month, with average low temperature of 5°F (-15°C).

The history of Butte has been tied all along to mining. Founded in the late 19th century, it was a site for gold and silver mining, followed by copper mining. The city also has one of the largest deposits of Bornite in the world. Mining activities in Butte declined in the 1950s and the quality of ore went down.

Visiting Butte

Interstate 90 and 15 are the two main highways linking Butte with the rest of the country. The I-15 runs north south, linking the city with Helena to the north and Idaho Falls to the south while the I-90 runs east west, connecting it with Bozeman to the east and Anaconda to the west.

Places of Interest in Butte

  1. Berkeley Pit
    The huge open pit for copper mining. It is filled with toxic water. There is an observation deck to view the pit.

  2. Copper King Mansion
    Former home of William Andrews Clark, a local copper magnate, today a bed-and-breakfast and museum.

  3. Dumas Brothel
    The longest running brothel in America, operating legally from 1890 until 1982. It functioned as a museum until financial constraints forced it to close down.

  4. Mai Wah Museum
    Museum in the Wah Chong Tai building and adjacent Mai Wah Noodle Parlor building, this museum documents the history of Asians in the Rocky mountain area.

  5. Our Lady of the Rockies
    90-foot (27-m) statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built overlooking Butte, on the Continental Divide. It is the largest statue of the Madonna in the United States and the second largest statue in the country.

  6. Venus Alley
    The once-famous red-light district of Butte.
