More on Cape Girardeau

Cape Girardeau dates back to a temporary trading post established by the French in 1733. It was named after a French soldier, Jean Baptiste de Gerardot, who was stationed there. The "Cape" in the name refers to a rocky headland jutting into the Mississippi River on the site. It is no longer around, having been blasted off during the construction of a railway line.
