Carnegie Hall was built by Andrew Carnegie, often referred to as the second richest man in history after John D. Rockefeller. It was designed by architect William Burnet Tuthill. It was one of the last large buildings in New York to be built entirely of masonry, without a steel frame. However a steel frame was erected around some parts of the building later, when additions were made to the building.

Within Carnegie Hall are three performance spaces. The main auditorium, also called the Isaac Stern Auditorium, has a seating capacity of 2,804 on five levels. It is the biggest of several concert calls bearing the Carnegie name, including the 420-seat Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg, West Virginia, the 1928-seat Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the 1022-seat Carnegie Music Hall also in Pittsburgh, and the 540-seat Carnegie Hall in Dunfermline, Scotland.

In addition to the Isaac Stern Auditorium, Zankel Hall has a seating capacity of 599 and Weill Recital Hall a capacity of 268. Other facilities at Carnegie Hall includes the Carnegie Hall Archives and the Rose Museum.

How to reach Carnegie Hall

Take the N, Q, R or W train to the 57th Street subway station. Emerging from the subway station, look south and you will see Carnegie call across West 57th Street.
