More on Carson City
The Carson City area was originally inhabited by the Washoe tribe when the first Europeans arrived in the area. As such the area was originally called Washoe. In 1851 it became known as 1851, and in 1858 it was renamed again, to Carson City. The name was taken from Carson River, which was named by early settler John C. Fremont in honor of Christopher "Kit" Carson, the scout he hired for his expedition.
The discovery of gold and silver fueled a population boom in 1859. But hard times fell on the city when the railroad built bypassed it. Its population declined and did not return to the level of the 1880s until 1960.
