Castle Rock is the county seat of Douglas County, Colorado. It is located 28 miles (46 km) to the south of Denver, and 37 miles (60 km) to the north of Colorado Springs. The town covers 31.6 sq mi (81.9 sq mi) and has a population of 48,000 (2011 estimate). It is located at an elevation of 6,224 ft (1,897 m). It observes the Mountain Standard Time, which is 7 hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-7) and six hours behind during Daylight Saving Time in summer. Castle Rock is at the western edge of the Great Plains, with the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains just a few miles further west. Running through the town is East Plum Creek, a stream within the South Platte River basin. The landscape surrounding Castle Rock includes canyons, mesas, plateaus, steep hills and cliffs.

Castle Rock experiences a semi-arid climate. Hottest month is July, when the average high temperature reaches 84°F (28.9°C). Coldest month is January, when the average low temperature drops to 13.6°F (-10.2°C). Castle Rock receives just 17.3 in (440 mm) of precipiation per year. This includes snowfalls from November until April.

The town of Castle Rock was founded in 1874. It was named after Castle Rock butte, a big rock within the town limits. The Castle Rock area was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes such as the Arapahoe and Cheyenne. Europans began to move into the area following the Homestead Act of 1862. There was rumor of gold in the area which attracted prospectors.

Castle Rock is today the home of the Denver Technological Center. From 1986 through 2006 the town played host to a professional golf tournament.

Castle Rock can be reached by taking Interstate 25 from Denver. Exit the highway at Exit 181 or 182 to reach the town.
