More on Chandler AZ

Chandler was named after Dr. Alexander John Chandler, a veterinary surgeon who settled in the area in 1891. Around 1900, Dr. Chandler acquired 18,000 acres of land in the area, and began planning a township there, known as Chandler Ranch. The township itself can be said to have started around 1912, when the townsite office and Chandler High School were established.

Up until 1950 the township of Chandler only had a population of 3,000. It began to grow rapidly in the 1980's, fueled by the rapid expansion of Phoenix. The spillover effect of this was that several giant multinational companies set up their manufacturing plants in Chandler, among them Intel and Motorola. Nevertheless the majority of the population of Chandler commute to work in downtown Phoenix.
