More on Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill is one of the towns that form the Research Triangle, along with the cities of Raleign and Durham. Warmest month here is July, when average high temperature reaches 89.1°F (31.7°C). Coldest month is January, with average low temperature of 27.3°F (-2.6°C). Rainfall is fairly evenly spread throughout the year, though March, August and September tend to be the wettest months.

The formation of Chapel Hill dates back to the land grant to William Barbee in 1753. This and a subsequent land grant creates the area that is today Chapel Hill and Durham. Graves in the area known as Barbee's Mountain is believed to be those of the William Barbee and his family.

Chapel Hill got its name from an Anglican chapel, called the New Hope Chapel, which was located on a small hill in the town center. That chapel is long gone today. Its site is now the Carolina Inn.

In 1968, Chapel Hill made history by being the first predominantly white municipality to elect a black mayor. Another momentous occasion was when the town made all local buses free of fares in 2002. The bus fares are since financed by the Chapel Hill and Carrboro city taxes, Federal grants and UNC student fees.

In 1993 Chapel Hill celebrated its Bicentennial. In 1996 it opened the Chapel Hill Museum, which operated until July 2010.
