Charlotte is the biggest city in North Carolina. Founded around 1768, it was named after Queen Charlotte, the wife of British King George III. The name was chosen in the hopes of flattering the British king. Unfortunately relationship between George III and the people of Charlotte was strained when the British imposed unpopular laws in response to the people's quest for independence. On 20 Mary, 1775, the people of Charlotte proceeded to proclaim their independence in the Mecklenburg Declaration.
