Writer Clement Clarke Moore, who wrote A Visit From St Nicholas and Twas the Night Before Christmas, was born in the Chelsea neighbourhood. In the 1830's, he bought a piece of land here which he divided into lots and built townhouses. Many of these houses are highly prized real estate today.
The finest properties at Chelsea Historic District are seven houses known as Cushman Row. They are Nos. 406-418 West 20th Street. They were named after their original owner Alonzo Cushman, the merchant who founded the Greenwich Savings Bank. He joined Moore and James N. Wells to be the developer of the Chelsea neighborhood.
