Church of the Heavenly Rest is an Episcopal Church on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City. It is located across from Central Park.
The Church of the Heavenly Rest was founded by veterans of the American Civil War in 1868. It commemorates soldiers who died in the war. Originally located at Fifth Avenue and 46th Street, it moved to its present located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 90th Street in 1929.

The church bought the land in 1926 and a church building in the Neo-Gothic style was designed. It cost $3.2 million and has a capacity of 1,050. A number of sculptors were initially commissioned to create sculptures for the church, but some of these were never done. The Stock Market Crash of 1929 caused many of the initial plans to be downsized. One of the sculptures that were completed was the Madonna at the pulpit, created by sculptor Malvina Hoffman.
How to reach the Church of the Heavenly Rest
Take the 4, 5 or 6 train to the 86th Street subway station. Walk west along East 86th Street until junction with Fifth Avenue. Turn right, walk north along Fifth Avenue until you arrive at the Church of the Heavenly Rest, which is at the junction of East 90th Street, across the road from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
