Colorado Springs experiences a semi-arid climate. Its summers are warm and dry, with average July temperatures reaching 90°F (32°C) while in January, it may dip to 28.1°F (-2.2°C).

Colorado Springs was founded on 31 July, 1871 by General William Jackson Palmer, a surveyor for the Kansas Pacific Railroad, who was exploring the area with the intention of building a railway line through there. General Palmer established the settlement, originally called Little London, to be an upscale resort for English tourists.

General Palmer differentiated Colorado Springs from the rough-and-ready Colorado City - now called Old Colorado City - by ensuring his well-planned, manicured city free from above-the-counter alcohol. He also bought land east of (Old) Colorado City to ensure that no haphazard development encroaches on Colorado Springs.
