Columbia is the capital and largest city in South Carolina. It is also the county seat of Richland County, with a portion of it extending into Lexington County. Located at an elevation of 292 ft (89 m), Columbia covers 133.8 sq mi (346.5 sq km) and has a population of 129,000 (2011 estimate), within a metropolitan area of 770,000 people.

The history of Columbia goes back to 1786. The choice of site was determined to a large extend by Columbia's geographical location near the center of South Carolina. It was incorporated as a city in 1854. The city was designed from scratch to be a two-mile square comprising 400 blocks.
Today Columbia is a modern city was a diversified economy. It is home to SCANA, the only Fortune 500 company in South Carolina, based in the suburb of Cayce.
