Columbus is a city in central-eastern Mississippi, USA. It is the county seat of Lowndes County. The city covers 22.3 sq mi (57.8 sq km) and has a population of 24,000 people (2011 estimate).

Columbus is hot in summer and cold in winter. July and August are the hottest month, when the average high temperature reaches 93°F (34°C). On the other hand, the average low temperature of January is only 33°F (1°C). Columbus receives the most rain in March, at 6.07 in (154.2 mm).

Spanish explorer and conquistador Hernando de Soto was the first European to pass through the Columbus area in the 16th century. However the site remained unexplored for the subsequent century, not until 1810, when it was settled by John Pitchlynn, an American interpreter for the Choctaw Nation. The failure of an existing settlement across the Plymouth River led indirectly to its establishment as a town in 1817.

Columbus was a hospital town during the American Civil War. It hosted a US air force base during the Second World War. By the mid-20th century, it was developed into an industrial town manufacturing household products, everything from mattresses to furniture, and boosted of being the world's largest producer of toilet seats.
