More on Columbus OH
Columbus was founded in 1812 and is located at the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers. It has been the capital of Ohio since 1816. The choice of Columbus, rather than earlier front-runners Cincinnati or Zanesvilles, was a compromise to locate the capital at the center of the state.
Archaeological evidence has indicated the presence of human habitation in the Columbus area since prehistoric times, with the discovery of Native American burial mound at several locations.
Today Columbus has a modern downtown area, the result of a facelift that begun in the 1970's, the result of which several heritage landmarks were pulled down, including Union Station and Neil House Hotel. A few skyscrapers were added to the skyline while the waterfront was developed into an excellent recreational area called Scioto Mile.
