Corvallis is the county seat of Benton County in central western Oregon. It covers an area of 13.8 sq mi (35.7 sq km) and has a population of 55,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is home to the Oregon State University.

Corvallis is located in the Willaimette Valley about 46 miles (74 km) inland from the Oregon Coast at Newport. It is also about 48 mi (77 km) to the north of Eugene. The city is today very much dependent on the university as the main local employer, although it is also a major town for IT companies with facilities by CH2M Hill, Siga Technologies and Hewlett-Packard all located here.

The history of Corvallis goes back to 1845, when Joseph C. Avery settled at the confluence of the Marys River with the Williamette River. He opened a store in the area, and called the site Marysville. In 1853, the state legislative assembly changed the city's name to Corvallis, which comes from the Latin cor vallis, meaning "heart of the valley". It gained city status in 1857.

US Highway 34 is the main highway through Corvallis. It runs east-west to connect with Interstate 5 in the east.
