Covington is the fifth most populous city in Kentucky. Covering 13.7 sq mi (35.4 sq km), it has a population of 41,000 people (2011 estimate). Located at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking rivers in northern Kentucky, it is one of the two county seats of Kenton County and is within the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky metropolitan area.

Covington was established in 1814 when a group of men developed the area west of Licking River. It grew rapidly in the 19th century, but the growth petered out during the Great Depression.
