Dallas is the third largest city in Texas and the 8th largest in the United States. It has a population of 1.2 million people, and is located within the 12-county Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area, which has a population of 6.3 million people, and is the largest inland (without a coastal port) metropolitan area in the United States.

Dallas is famous for being a center for banking, commerce, telecommunications and computer technology. The city was made famous by the 1970's soap opera of the same name, and infamous as the site of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Dallas was founded in 1841. Before that, the area was inhabited by the Caddo Native Americans. There is no complete agreement among historians as to after whom the city was named. The city is on a relatively flat land, on an elevation of between 450 feet (137 meters) to 550 feet (168 meters). Although far from the sea, it was established along a river, the Trinity.

The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is the airport serving both Dallas and Fort Worth. It is the hub for American Airlines, which account for 80% of the flight volume from the airport. In addition, there is a second airport at Love Field (DAL), which is used by Southwest Airlines, Continental Express and Delta Air Lines, but due to proximity to downtown, has certain flight restrictions.

Arriving at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport
Take the Dallas Area Rapit Transit (DART) bus. It goes to the commuter train station from where you can take a train to Dallas. The single-ride ticket and day-passes can be purchased on the bus.
By Train
Amtrak has two train services to Dallas/Fort Worth. The Texas Eagle line runs between San Antonio and Chicago while the Heartland Flyer between Fort Worth and Oklahoma.
By Car
Dallas is 250 miles to the north of Houston on the Interstate-45. From Austin, take Interstate-35 North and from Oklahoma, take the Interstate-35 or US 75 south.
By Bus
Greyhound Buses have services connecting Dallas with many US cities. Its terminal is at 205 S Lamar Street.
