Dayton is the sixth biggest city in Ohio. It covers 56.6 sq mi (147 sq km) and has a population of 142,000 (2011 estimate). The population of the Dayton metropolitan area is 842,000, the fourth biggest metropolitan area in the state. The city is also the county seat of Montgomery County.

Dayton was founded on 1 April, 1796, by a pioneer group of settlers known as the Thompson Party that traveled up the Great Miami River from Cincinnati. Dayton was incorporated in 1805, and named in honor of Jonathan Dayton, a captain of the American Revolutionary War and signer of the US Constitution, who owned most of the land in the area.

The construction of the Miami and Erie Canal fueled the growth of Dayton, as it enabled goods to be transported via the Great Miami River down to Lake Erie. A major flood in 1913 crippled the city, and caused the population to relocate to suburban areas.

The city of Dayton is today renowned for its various industries that include aviation, aerospace and technological research. The economy of the city has shifted to service industries such as insurance and legal as well as healthcare and government.

Dayton was the venue of the Dayton Agreement, also called the Dayton Peace Accord, which was negotiated at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in November 1995 over the conflict in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the former Yugoslavia.

Dayton experiences a humid continental climate. Its summers are hot and wet while its winters cold and dry. The warmest month is July, when the average high temperature may readh 84.2°F (29°C) while the coldest month, January, sees the average dropping to 19°F (-7.22°C).

Dayton is reached on I-75 from Cincinnati to the south, and on I-70 from Columbus to the east. The I-75 also connects Dayton with Toledo to the north.

You can also fly to Dayton, arriving at the James M. Cox Dayton International Airport (DAY), which receives non-stop flights from major cities in the country.
