Delaware is a small state on the Atlantic Coast of the United States. It is part of the Mid-Atlantic region. The state covers an area of just 2,490 sq miles (6,452 sq km), making it the second smallest state in America after Rhode Island. Delaware was actually named after Thomas West, the 3rd Baron de la Warr, a British nobleman who served as the first colonial governor of Virginia.

Delaware covers the northeastern part of the Delmarva Peninsula. It is bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, New Jersey to the east, and Maryland to the west and south. The state comprises just three counties, namely New Castle, Kent and Sussex. 60% of the population of Delaware of 885,000 live in New Castle County. The capital of Delaware is Dover but its largest city is Wilmington.

Budget Travel to Delaware

By Plane
If you are flying in, you will most likely be arriving in an airport outside the state. The major ones are Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) 20 miles and about half an hour to the northeast of Wilmington, Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI), about 90 minutes away, and Salisbury-Ocean City Wicomico Regional Airport (SBY), which is closest to the southern beaches of Delaware.

There are frequent high-speed trains connecting Wilmington to New York City, Boston, and Washington, D.C.

Apart from the city of Wilmington, which has a good mass transit system, for exploring the rest of Delaware, you will do well to drive. Car rentals are available at all the airports.
