El Museo del Barrio is the leading Latino art museum in New York City. Located at 1230 Fifth Avenue in East Harlem, it provides visitors with an understanding and appreciation of Latino, Hispanic and Latin American cultures with its vast collection and exhibits.
El Museo del Barrio is one of the museums along the Museum Mile at Fifth Avenue, across the street from the Conservatory Garden of Central Park. The museum was founded by artist Raphael Montañez Ortiz in 1969 with help from fellow artists, activists, educators and parents, as until then, the work of Latino artists are not noted by the mainstream museums.

El Museo opened at the Heckscher Building, at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 104th Street. It held its first large-scale exhibition, entitled The Art Heritage of Puerto Rico, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
In 2009 the museum underwent extensive renovation. It reopened to the public on 17 October, 2009 and held two landmark exhibitions: Nexus New York: Latin/American Artists in the Modern Metropolis and Voces y Visiones: Forty Decades through El Museo del Barrio's Permanent Collection
