Evansville benefitted from the Second World War, as its factories were used to support the war effort, aircrafts and military ships. The industrial production of the city continued apace after the war, shifting to consumer products. At the same time, its population started moving away from the downtown areas into the suburbs.

Today Evansville is the commercial, medical and service hub for the tri-state region. It has Indiana's first gaming boat, the Casino Aztar, as well as some heavy industries.
