Fayetteville is the third largest city in Arkansas. It covers 44.5 sq mi (115.2 sq km) and has a population of 77,000 (2011 estimate). The city is also the county seat of Washington County. It is within the Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers metropolitan area which has a combined population of 424,000.

Fayetteville is located in the Ozark Mountains. The city is at an elevation of 1,400 ft (427 m). It experiences a humid subtropical climate, with influences of the humid continental climate. Hottest month in Fayetteville is July, when the average high temperature regularly reaches 89.1°F (31.72°C). Coldes month is January, when the average low temperature drops to 24.2°F (-4.33°C). Rain is heaviest in June, at 5.26 in (133.6 mm) while snow can be expected from December to February.

Fayetteville was named after Gilbert du Motier, the Marquis de Lafayette, the French aristocrat who served as a general for the Americans during the American Revolutionary War. The town and Washington County were created around the same time, in the early 19th century.

Fayetteville is renowned as the home of the University of Arkansas. It is often called the Track Capital of the World for having won numerous athletic championships. The city is also listed as among the best cities to work live and play, according to Kiplinger's 2008 List.
