Fort Collins is the home to the Colorado State University. It is located on the Cache La Poudre River, about 57 miles (92 km) north of Denver. The city began as a military outpost in 1864, created to protect the overland mail routes from attacks by local tribes of Native Americans. After the fort was decommissioned, the settlement continued to grow as a civilian township.

Fort Collins continued to grow throughout the early 20th century, with its development slowed by the Great Depression. The economy of the city was dependent on agriculture, particularly sugar-beet farming.
