Fort Stanwix National Monument, New York

Fort Stanwix National Monument is a historic site in the town of Rome, in New York State. It is the site of the historical Fort Stanwix. The present structure is in fact a reconstruction. Fort Stanwix National Monument was designated on 21 August, 1935. The site - not the reconstruction - was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on 15 October, 1966.
Fort Stanwix played in important role in the history of the United States. It helped defend the nation from British invasion coming from the direction of Canada. This was where the Treaty of Fort Stanwix was signed on 1768, where agreement was reached between the North American Indians and the British Empire on the boundary between Indian lands and British settlement lands.

Fort Stanwix was reconstructed in 1974 based on the three-year archaelogical investigation carried out by the National Park Service in 1970. It was completed in time for the United States Bicentennial celebration in 1976.
Visiting Fort Stanwix National Monument, New York
Fort Stanwix National Monument is located right at the heart of the city of Rome (see Google Map for location), New York State. You can reach Rome by take Interstate-90 (New York State Thruway). From the west, turn off at Exit 33 (Verona-Rome) onto State Route 365 and head northeast. From the east, turn off at Exit 32 (Westmoreland) and right onto State Route 233 (Rome-Westmoreland Rd) heading north. Follow Route 233 for 6 miles, then turn left to Route 49N/69W/365W. Next bear right on ramp to Route 49N / Route 69W and turn right onto Route 26 (N James St). You will see Fort Stanwix National Monument on your right.Fort Stanwix National Monument is open daily 9:00 am to 5:00 pm except on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. There is no entrance fee to visit this site.
