Around that time, French Catholic missionaries were making inroads through the area. In 1696, a French military installation called Fort Miamis was placed there. This was replaced by Fort St. Philippe des Miamis in 1721. The defeat of the French in the French and Indian War brought the Kekionga area under British control in 1760, and the fort was renamed Fort Miami. In 1794, US forces defeated the Miami tribe and captured the area. Then the United States built Fort Wayne, at the confluence of the St Joseph River, St Marys River and Maumee River. The town was incorporated in 1829.
