Located 1,693 ft (516 m) above sea level, Fredericksburg experiences a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. July and August are the warmest month, when the average high temperature rises to 93°F (34°C). The coldest month is January, with average low temperature of 49°F (9°C). May receives the most rain, at 4.29 in (109 mm).Fredericksburg is like a piece of Germany (or to be exact, Prussia) within Texas. It was founded in 1846 by Baron Otfried Hans von Meusebach, and was settled by ethnic Germans fleeing the turbulence in central Europe (in the running up to the Revolution of 1848 in the German States). In Texas, the baron renounced his noble title and became known as John O. Meusebach. Due to his red hair, the people called him El Sol Colorado ("The Red Sun").

The German settlers - particularly the first generation - refused to learn English, sticking to using their mother tongue. As a result, Texas German (Texasdeutsch) a near extinct dialect is still spoken among the elderly descendants today. It is really intelligible to people who speak standard German, just that some words were coined from English and Germanicized. For example, an aeroplane is called Luftschiff in Texas German (literally "air ship") whereas in Standard German, it is Flugzeug.
The architecture of Fredericksburg is often distinct and unique, as it bears heavy influcnes of the German immigrants who settled and established the city in the 19th century. Today the Gillespie County Historical Society is working actively to ensure the preservation of these historic buildings.
