Fresno is the fifth largest city in California. Located at the center of the San Joaquin Valley in central California, Fresno is the largest inland city in the state. It is 200 miles (322 km) to the north of Los Angeles and 170 miles (274 km) to the south of Sacramento.

Fresno is Spanish for ash tree. It has a population of over half a million people (2011 estimate), and a metropolitan population of 1.1 million. Metropolitan Fresno is the second most populous metropolitan area in the Central Valley after the Sacramento Metropolitan Area.

The history of Fresno goes back to 1867, when Anthony Easterby bought land in the area. A few years later, he built canals to irrigate the fields. The township was initially called Fresno Station.

Right up to the Second World War, Fresno was a community of ethnic minorities, including Armenians, Germans, Italians and Japanese.

The Fresno/Yosemite International Airport (FAT) is served by flights from Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Dallas/Fort Worth and Guadalajara, among others.

The most popular - and practical - way to reach Fresno is by car. If you are coming from San Francisco, take either US Highway 101 or Interstate 5, then continue along State Highway 152 heading east till State Highway 99, then continue south till you reach Fresno. From Los Angeles take Interstate 5 till Exit 221 and continue on State Highway 99 till you reach Fresno.
