Georgia is a state in the southeastern region of the United States of America. Georgia was the last of the original Thirteen Colonies which declared their independence from Britain in the American Revolution, resulting in the formation of the United States of America.

Georgia covers an area of 59,425 sq miles (153,909 sq km). It is the largest state east of the Mississippi in terms of land area, and fourth largest in total area (inclusive bodies of water). Georgia has a population of 9.8 million people, making it the 9th most populous state in the country.

Georgia experiences a humid subtropical climate. The state is prone to tornadoes, including one which hit downtown Atlanta on 14 March, 2008, causing some damage. The state, especially the coastal areas, is also vulnerable to hurricanes. On the other hand it has also went through severe droughts in 2006 and 2007.
