Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is a national park in the southeastern part of Alaska. It covers 5,130 sq mi (13,287 sq km) of which 4,164 sq mi (10,784 sq km) is a designated wilderness area.
The Glacier Bay National Park was first proclaimed a national monument on 25 February, 1925. It was elevated to national park on 2 December, 1980. It was also made an International Biosphere Reserve in 1986. At the 3rd session of the World Heritage Committee in Cairo, Egypt in 1979, it was recognized in a joint US-Canada inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site entitled Kluane-Wrangell-St Elias-Glacier Bay-Tatshenshini-Alsek.

Glacier Bay National Park was named for its numerous glaciers which descend from the snow-capped mountains into the bay. Of these, nine are tidewater glaciers that end in the sea, four of which calve icebergs into the bay. The most dramatic of the tidewater glaciers was the Muir Glacier, named after famous naturalist John Muir, who visited it in 1878 and 1880 and described it in the San Francisco Bulletin. Formerly a tidewater glacier, the Muir had since receded and no longer end at the sea. Existing tidewater glaciers visitors view today include the Margerie and the Lamplugh Glaciers.
The Glacier Bay National Park is home to a variety of wildlife including grizzly bears, black bears, moose, mountain goats, dall sheep, lynx, sea otters and harbor seals. In the sea are orcas, humpback whales and salmon.

Visiting Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Alaska
There are no roads to take you into this national park. You can to go there either by plane or boat. Planes land at the airfield in Gustavus. The only road in the park connects the airfield and the adjacent township of Gustavus with the park headquarters at Barlett Cove ten miles down the road. There are daily flights by Alaska Airlines between Juneau and Gustavus. Click here to check airfare.The visitor information station is open until September. In May it is open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, in June through August daily from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm and in September daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
