More on Grand Island
Grand Island got its name because the initial settlement, established by a group of 35 German settlers in 1857, was located on an island between the Wood River and the Platte River. Later on a proper town was established inland from the island.
Grand Island grew as a farming town. Among the main crops grown here are sugar beets. The town was hit by seven tornadoes on 3 June, 1980, causing widespread destruction and killing five people.
