Green Bay is the county seat of Brown County in central eastern Wisconsin. As its name suggests, it is located at the head of a body of water known as Green Bay, which is a sub-basin of Lake Michigan. The city of Green Bay covers 54.3 sq mi (140.7 sq km) and has a population of 104,000 people (2012 estimate), making it the third largest city in Wisconsin.

Green Bay experiences a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold, snowy winters. The warmest month is July, with average high temperatures of 81.2°F (27.3°C). January is the coldest month, when average low temperatures drop to 7.1°F (-13.8°C). August receives the most rain, at 3.77 in (95.8 mm).The first European to settle in the Green Bay area were French fur trappers. Until then, it was inhabited by Native American tribes. In 1634, Jean Nicolet established a small trading post in the area, calling it La Baie des Puants (meaning "the stinking bay"). This makes Green Bay the oldest permanent settlement in America. Due to frequent attacks and skirmishes with the indigenous people, a fort was erected in the area in 1717. A town was incorporated here in 1754.
Charles de Langlade became the first permanent French settler in Green Bay, in 1765. The British continued to administer the area even after the American Revolutionary War. The name Green Bay became more popular as British settlers arrived, eventually outnumbering the French settlers. It became part of the United States in 1783.
